Air quality consultation

The purpose of this consultation is to seek your views on Perth & Kinross Council's Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) for the Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) designated in 2006.

Perth & Kinross Council's Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP)

The AQAP is a package of measures designed to reduce traffic pollution in Perth so that compliance with health based objectives for air quality can be achieved. The AQMA currently covers the whole city, and was designated because of measured and predicted exceedences of the annual mean objectives for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and fine particulate material (PM10). Perth & Kinross Council has a statutory duty to work towards achieving these objectives by implementing an AQAP.

Both NO2 and PM10 can cause health effects, particularly where a person already has problems with their breathing, for example in those with asthma. These pollutants are mainly emitted from traffic, and objectives can commonly be exceeded in areas where there is congestion, or where building effects prevent natural dispersal of vehicle fumes. These conditions currently exist in certain parts of Perth city centre and implementation of an AQAP should help to alleviate air quality problems and allow the Council to move towards achieving the objectives.
