Commercial FAQs

Some of the common questions that are asked by commercial businesses are listed here, if you need further information follow the links below or call the Environment Service Helpline on 01738 476476.

Why has my recycling bin not been emptied?

Have you presented the bin correctly? If the bin lid is raised (i.e. there is too much rubbish in the bin) or the bin is not presented on the kerbside then the bin will not be uplifted by the collection crew. Side waste will also not be uplifted by the collection crew. The bin should be presented by 7:30am to avoid being missed.

Is the recycling bin contaminated? If the bin has contaminates such as food waste, plastic packaging or the wrong material (e.g. cardboard in a paper bin) the bin will not be uplifted by the collection crew.

Do you have the correct collection date? If you think your bin has been missed, you can help us investigate by telephoning the Customer Service Centre on 01738 476476.  We'll need information about the location of the missed commercial waste such as the type of waste, your address and the date of missed pick up.

If you are unsure of your collection dates, please contact the Customer Service Centre on 01738 476476.

When do I present my bin for collection?

Collections can be arranged on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis. This will be pre-arranged before your first collection.

If you need further assistance or are unsure of your collection dates please contact The Environment Service Helpline on 01738 476476

What should I put in my bin?

The colour of your bin lid denotes the type of material collected in that bin. It is important that the correct materials go into your bin(s), as contamination can cause problems during reprocessing of the recyclates.

  • Glass (red lid): Mixed glass only
  • Paper (blue lid): Brochures, magazines, newspapers, office quality paper, the contents of junk mail. Please do not place books, cardboard, greetings cards, envelopes, plastic or telephone directories in the paper bin
  • Cardboard (silver galvanised bin): cardboard only. Please flat-pack the cardboard to maximise the amount of cardboard that you can fit in the bin.

How can I pay for my bin and waste collection?

Your collection service can be paid by direct debit or invoice.

What do I do if I run out of Green Labels for cardboard recycling

Green labels are only delivered once a month to businesses that order them. If you require green labels for cardboard recycling out-with this time they can be purchased directly from The Environment Service, Pullar House, 35 Kinnoull Street, Perth.

I have a lot of waste, how can I reduce it?

A site visit can be arranged to discuss your individual requirements. There are several organisations who may be able to offer your company more specialist solutions to minimise your waste

To discuss the services that Perth & Kinross Council can provide, or to arrange a site visit, contact our Commercial Waste Team on 01738 476476.

What is Landfill Tax?

Landfill tax is levied on every tonne of waste sent to landfill. Landfill tax is designed to divert waste from landfill by acting as a financial incentive to look at other, more sustainable, waste management options.  Landfill tax in 2010/11 is £48 per tonne but this will increase by £8 a year until April 2013.

How Does Landfill Tax Effect my Business?

The rising landfill tax means that if you have to send waste to landfill you may be able to save money by separating your different types of waste first - so that some items can be recycled, some items can be reused and more waste can be minimised.

Why should my business recycle?

There are many economic, social and environmental reasons why businesses should choose reduce, reuse, recycle.

How does the cost of recycling compare to my current waste costs? Do I pay more for recycling?

Trade waste incurs landfill charges plus an operational cost whereas recycling is not subject to landfill tax and only incurs the operational cost. This means that many businesses benefit economically from recycling because they are reducing their Landfill tax liability.

I think someone else might be able to use my waste, where can I find out about re-use projects?
