Composting at home
The highly successful subsidised home composting scheme which
has been running since 2004 has now come to an end. With
over 22,000 compost bins distributed in this time it has
played its part in helping to reduce the volume of waste being sent
to landfill in the Perth and Kinross area.
In Scotland as a whole, over a quarter of a million composters have
been distributed and an estimated 160,000 tonnes of waste diverted
from landfill. This has led to a potential cost saving
(against sending waste to landfill) of approximately £12
million, so it is clear that home composting has proven a
simple and cost effective way in which many householders can help
reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill.
