Troubleshooting
Composting is easy as long as you follow a few simple rules, occasionally problems can occur and these are often easily remedied.
See below for a few quick fixes to some of the common composting problems.
Why is my compost is slimy and smelly?
This means that too many "greens" have been added to the composter which decompose very quickly. Thoroughly mix some drier materials such as crumpled paper or card.
Why are there are clouds of black flies in my bin?
These are harmless flies that feed from fruit peelings. Make sure that fruit skins are mixed thoroughly with the other materials in the bin and spread a thin layer of soil over the top.
I seem to have ants in my bin, what can I do?
This can suggest that the bin is too dry. Try adding some "greens" such as grass clippings and some water.
I filled my bin and nothing seems to be happening?
This means that there are too many "browns" or dry material. Add an activator such as grass clippings and try to site the composting bin in a sunny place.
