What to do with Paint Not Suitable for Reuse?

Please let the paint harden and put it in the green-lidded waste bin once it is no longer liquid. There are two methods available:

1) You can buy a paint hardener: One packet contains enough crystals to harden 2.5 liters of water based or latex paint. It is easy to use, works in minutes and is not toxic.

2) Add sawdust, sand or soil to the tin and leave the lid off until the paint becomes solid and dry (please pierce the dried paint before disposing of it to ensure it's fully hardened).

3) Leave lid off tin to allow for ease of inspection. If the lid is metal and well cleaned, it can be disposed of at the kerbside in the blue-lidded bin or in the scrap metal skip at Recycling Centres.

Commercial Waste

Separated paper, cardboard, cans, glass and plastic bottles are accepted free of charge at all Recycling Centres.

Friarton Recycling Centre does not offer provision for commercial waste disposal beyond these materials. All other Recycling Centres will accept commercial and trade waste, however a charge is applicable. The Council also offers a Commercial Recycling Service.

Information on compost available from Recycling Centres

Storage & Handling

  • Store compost undercover, or in a dry place
  • Wear gloves when gardening or applying any horticultural products
  • The compost is usually moist and therefore carries a low dust risk
  • Do not open bags of composting or potting media with your head right over it
  • Avoid potting up in confined spaces
  • Moisten dry potting media before use. Dampen down dry compost heaps before turning or use
  • Consider wearing a dust mask when turning compost heaps and handling potting media or other dusty materials
  • Avoiding storing potting media in greenhouses as these will heat up and may encourage Legionella
  • Always wash your hands after using potting media and especially before eating

Uses for the compost

The compost can be used for a number of gardening, allotment, and landscaping applications, and should be used in a similar way to peat based potting compost. Popular uses include:

  • Bedding displays and soil conditioning
  • Shrubs, trees and roses, applied to each plant at planting, and as a top dressing after pruning
  • Tubs and containers - typically use 1 part compost to 1 part soil medium
  • Turf, lawns and playing fields
