Trial for Kerbside Collection of Textiles

Perth & Kinross Council is working with two local charities:

Capability Scotland Scottish charity number SC 011330, and Children's Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS), Scottish charity number SC 019724 (in partnership with Clothes Aid), to trial a Household Textile Kerbside Collection.

Which households are involved in the Trial?

The first collection sack (and a leaflet about what can be collected) has been delivered to the households included in the Trial.  These households are in parts of Auchterarder, Bridge of Earn, Kinross, Blairgowrie and two areas of Perth: Western Edge and Bridgend and Gannochy.

Only households selected for the Trial will be issued with a lealfet and sack. If you have not received a leaflet and sack, please do not present textiles for collection as they will not be uplifted.

An update leaflet and new sack will be delivered to all participating households by the first week in February 2012.

When is this trial taking place?

The trial began in October 2011 and will continue until further notice.

Why is the Council doing this Trial and what can be collected?

Not everyone has the time, or a car, to take their unwanted good quality clothes, shoes, belts, bags and accessories to a local charity shop or a local Textile Recycling Bank.  We encourage anyone that can do this to continue donating directly to them.

Based on 2011 figures, Perth & Kinross Council estimates that 1,504 tonnes of textiles are sent to landfill from Perth and Kinross each year.

If you live on one of the six collection routes that this Trial is taking place on, then you will be able to put out your unwanted, good quality textiles in the supplied bag next to your blue lidded bin.

The Council will continue to collect the contents of your blue-lidded bin but, in addition, the charity will collect your bag of textiles on the same collection day.

The Charity will sort your textiles for reuse, either selling them in their Charity Shop or selling them abroad to generate income for the charity.  Any textile items that cannot be reused will be recycled into industrial rags.  This reduces the amount of textiles that are disposed of in landfill.

Textiles will be collected every fortnight either by Capability Scotland or Clothes Aid on behalf of Children's Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) depending which area you live in.

How should I present my bag?

Please tie up your bag securely so that the textiles are not damaged by the rain.
Please put your bag next to your blue lidded bin (but not inside the bin!)
When you have donated your bag of good quality textiles, the collection crew from the charity will deliver a replacement charity bag through your letter box.

What else can I do with my textiles?

Please also consider donating directly to your local charity shops and reuse projects. Have a look at our Charity Shop Map for more information.
