Clothes and textiles
Many items of clothing, shoes and household linen are discarded
because they are no longer fashionable or have become too large or
too small. Charity shops, clothing companies and people in other
countries can put these items to good use.
To find out where you can donate in your area visit the Charity
Map or Sort-It.
How to Recycle Your Textiles
Perth & Kinross Council, in partnership with a
sub-contractor, operates a wide network of textile banks at most
Recycling Centres & Points. Just place the items inside
plastic bags (to keep them clean and dry) and place them in the
textile bank.
The types of items you can recycle include:
- items of clothing including underwear
- curtains, net curtains, bedspreads, quilt covers,
tablecloths
- handbags
- shoes (tie shoe pairs together, single shoes also
accepted)
- belts
Who uses the Recycled Textiles?
There are a three main uses for recycled
textiles:
- Top quality second hand clothing, shoes, handbags and belts are
reused through the Retro Used Clothing Market, charity shops within
the UK or exported abroad. Examples of countries that import second
hand textiles from the UK include India, Pakistan, Morocco and
Romania.
- Garments which are no longer fit for wearing or textiles that
can no longer be used for their original purpose are cut into
industrial rags and used by industries such as Oil and Gas;
Printing, Auto Trade and Fishing.
- Some suitable textiles are reclaimed and used to make new
products such as rugs, mattresses or woolly sweaters.
