Cooking Oil
Cooking oil can be collected for further reprocessing into
a biofuel at any of the following
Recycling Centres:
- Pitlochry
- Aberfeldy
- Blairgowrie
- Friarton (in Perth)
- Kinross
- Crieff
Why Recycle Cooking Oil?
Recycling cooking oil to make biofuel benefits the environment
by conserving natural resources. It is an easy way of diverting
waste from landfill or from water courses. When disposed
of it down the drain, cooking oil causes blockages
and can damage vegetation and wildlife.
Cooking oil collected by Perth & Kinross Council is treated
by a sub-contractor who filter, cleans and reprocesses it into
biodiesel, a renewable substitute to diesel.
How to Collect Cooking Oil?
Cool the oil after cooking and pour it into a non-leaking
container (reusable container if available), instead of pouring it
down the sink. Pour the oil into the collection container at your
nearest Recycling Centre.
Please be aware that the cooking oil should not contain any bits of
food, other oils or cooking fat. Contaminants, such as cooking fat,
cannot be made into biodiesel.
What to do with Cooking Fat?
Cooking fat or animal fat (such as bacon grease or chicken fat)
is easily collected in a Scottish Water Fat Trap container, a
reusable old cup or a yogurt pot. Once it has cooled and solidified
you can safely throw it in the waste bin.
Please avoid putting cooking fat down the drain. According to
Scottish Water '55% of sewer blockages are caused by people
disposing of cooking fat down their sink. This clogs sewers and
pumping stations; leading to sewerage overflows and potentially
damaging the environment.'
Cooking fat can be added in moderation to a Green Cone Composter.
Please do not add cooking fat to other compost bins as it may
attract vermin.
