Food Waste
Last updated | 22/08/2011
For the majority of households, food waste can be collected
for composting in your brown-lidded bin. Kitchen caddies are
available to collect food waste in before depositing in your
brown-lidded bin. Please contact the Customer Service Centre on
01738 476476 to request a kitchen caddy if you do not have
one.
Why collect food waste?
The average household in Scotland throws away around £430
of food each year*. Waste food that is sent to landfill biodegrades
anaerobically, producing methane, a potent greenhouse gas. By
composting food waste instead, we are reducing this production of
methane and creating a valuable resource instead; compost.

Cooked and uncooked food, including:
- meat and fish, including bones
- dairy products, including cheese
- eggs
- fruit and vegetables
- bread, cakes and pastries
- tea bags and coffee grounds
- beans, pasta and rice
What happens to the food waste that we collect?
Food waste is collected alongside garden waste and sent to an
in-vessel composting facility. In-vessel composting is a process
whereby compost is made in an enclosed system. The compost that is
created is then taken to our Recycling Centres (except Bankfoot)
where it can be collected free of charge for use in your
garden.
