Paint
Usable paint can be donated for reuse through www.freecycle.org or should
be left to solidify before putting it in the general
waste bin or in the general waste skips at Recycling
Centres.
Clean and dry metal tins can be thrown into the scrap metal points
at any
Recycling Centre. Plastic or contaminated tins must be put in
the general waste container.
What to do with Paint Not Suitable for Reuse?
Please let the paint harden and put it in the green-lidded waste
bin once it is no longer liquid. There are two methods
available:
1) You can buy a paint hardener: One packet contains enough
crystals to harden 2.5 liters of water based or latex paint. It is
easy to use, works in minutes and is not toxic.
2) Add sawdust, sand or soil to the tin and leave the lid off
until the paint becomes solid and dry (please pierce the dried
paint before disposing of it to ensure it's fully hardened).
3) Leave lid off tin to allow for ease of inspection. If the
lid is metal and well cleaned, it can be disposed of in the scrap
metal skip at Recycling Centres.
How to Prevent Paint Waste?
Please follow the guidance on the tin of paint before buying to
ensure that you only buy the amount that you need. Online
paint calculators on websites such as the BBC, Dulux or Tesco can calculate how much paint you
need before you buy.
