Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (including lightbulbs)
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, also called
WEEE, refers to a range of items including large appliances
such as cookers and televisions, and smaller items like
calculators, lightbulbs and electronic toys. Many of these
items now become obsolete very quickly and we are generating large
amounts of equipment that can be reused or recycled.
Where can you Donate Electrical & Electronic
Equipment?
Many items, either broken (as they can be taken for
repair) or in good condition can be donated to
charity at Friarton Recycling Centre in Perth. Ask the onsite
staff about the Reuse Container to make your donation.
Computers can be donated directly to the WEEE Centre at Perth College during office
hours.
For information on where to get items repaired, please
visit the reuse section in the Sort-It directory or the
search the Yellow Pages.
Where can you Recycle Electrical & Electronic
Equipment?
When you replace an appliance the retailer may be able to
take away your old one for recycling. Please check with the
retailer. The Recycling Centres accept Waste
Electric and Electrical Equipment. Examples include:
- TVs, DVD & video players and stereos
- IT and telecommunication equipment
- Toys, leisure and sports equipment
- Lighting, electrical and electronic tools (except large
stationary industrial tools)
- Medical devices
Please note that only the new style low energy lightbulbs
can be recycled. Old style bulbs must be disposed of in general
waste.
Why Recycle Electrical & Electronic Equipment?
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment contain many different
components that often harbour dangerous chemicals and flame
retardants which should be disposed of properly. They also contain
many valuable metals such as aluminium and copper and other
materials such as plastic and glass that can be recycled.
All items collected by Perth & Kinross Council are refurbished
for reuse or recycled by a sub-contractor in
Perth.
