Plastic

In Perth and Kinross you can recycle two types of plastic.

HDPE

The first is natural HDPE (high-density polyethylene plastic) which tends to be used in plastic milk bottles or juice cartons like Sunny Delight.
(Referred to as Plastic Milk Bottles on signs)

PET

The second is PET(1) (polyethylene terephthalate) mainly used for fizzy and diluting juice bottles.
(Referred to as Plastic Drinks Bottles on signs)

We do not accept biotic yoghurt drink bottles, lids, food trays or punnets. Although they may have the PET 1 or HDPE 2 signs on them they are dyed plastics and therefore cannot be recycled in the same way.

You can tell the difference between the two types of plastics in several ways. The easiest is to look for the recycling signs, shown above, on the bottle.

Another way to tell the difference is by how the bottle looks, if the bottle is a milky white colour (milk bottles) then it will probably be HDPE.  If the plastic is transparent particularly those used for water or juice then it is likley to be a PET(1) (fizzy drinks bottle).

Why recycle plastic?
Due to consumer demand, plastic in all forms is one of the most widely used packaging materials with over 5 million tonnes produced annually.  Although plastic is a relatively light material it makes up a large percentage of waste going to landfill by volume.

What to do with the plastic bottles for recycling.

  • Wash it out to stop it smelling,
  • Squash the carton/bottle,
  • Put the lid in the general waste bin (it's made of a different type of plastic),
  • Put the plastic bottle in the either the Plastic Drinks Bottle Point or the Plastic Milk Bottle Point dependent on the type at your nearest recycling centre.

Please note that we do not collect milk bottle tops for recycling.

What is made from the recycled plastic?

Items such as plastic bollards, benches and non-slip decking are the most popular outlets for the recycled plastic.
