What happens to scrap metal?

Scrap metal is sorted into different types such as ferrous and non-ferrous and reprocessed into new metal.
The largest user of recycled metal is the UK's steelworks whom use almost 7 million tonnes a year in making about 18 million tonnes of new steel.
The iron foundry industry also uses specific grades of metal, which equates to around 1 million tonnes annually.
