Waste Collections During Severe Weather
Last updated | 13/01/2012
Severe Winter Weather
If, like last winter, we see severe weather that disrupts waste
collections we ask householders to take heed of the following
advice-
All householders are advised to present their bin on the
scheduled collection days as normal, unless specifically told not
to do so by the Council. To ensure you are getting the most current
information please register at www.pkc.gov.uk/emailalerts
, or sign up to the Council’s Twitter page at www.twitter.com/PerthandKinross.
If you do not have online access you can call the Customer Service
Centre on 01738 476476 to find out more. We will also ask local
radio stations to provide information throughout the duration of
any severe weather period. Please note, while local press will be
frequently updated, information in printed format may become out of
date –please check the website for up-to-date information www.pkc.gov.uk/recycle
To assist refuse collection crews in emptying your bins and to
help ensure their uplift, residents and businesses are urged
to:
- Clear a path from the bin presentation area to the road to
assist the crew in wheeling the bin to the rear of the vehicle for
emptying. If possible, bins should be presented at the edge
of the kerbside.
- Return the bin and/or sacks to their normal storage point if
the collection is not possible and they are causing an obstruction
to pedestrians or snow clearing equipment. If it is safe to
leave them on the pavement, and they are not causing an
obstruction, they can remain on the pavement.
- Take their bins or refuse sacks to the road end or the nearest
street where the road is relatively clear of snow for collection if
they live or work in a cul-de-sac or street that the refuse
collection vehicle may not be able to access and this is
possible.
- In the event of severe weather, collection schedules will
remain as per collection calendars. If a collection is missed or
cancelled due to the weather, excess waste will be collected in
sacks from the side of presented wheeled bins on your next
collection (with the exception of brown lidded bins as plastic
sacks cannot be composted).
- Ensure their bin lid is free of ice and snow and is not frozen
shut as this can prevent it from emptying when it is lifted by the
collection vehicle.
- Wrap food waste in newspaper before placing it in bin bags to
avoid it freezing to the side of the bin.
- Put a piece of cardboard at the bottom of the bin when it is
empty to try to stop the contents freezing to the bottom and
remaining in the bin when it is emptied.
- Store their bin somewhere that it is less likely to freeze the
day before collection, for example in a garage, or a place that
gets the sun in the morning.
