Public consultation on changes to brown lidded bin collections
PLEASE NOTE, THIS SURVEY HAS NOW CLOSED
Perth & Kinross Council is undertaking a public survey to gauge
public opinion on how best to take forward mixed food and garden
waste kerbside collections.
Over the last three years, there has been a substantial increase in
the volume of food and garden waste collected in the brown lidded
bins, particularly during the summer months. The Council has
previously engaged a fixed term collection crew to cover the
additional tonnages however this year has seen further increases,
the volume collected this May nearly double of that collected in
May 2009. As such, interim changes to the mixed food and
garden waste kerbside collection service came into force from 19th
July 2010.
Update November 2010
Perth & Kinross Council's Environment Convener, Councillor
Alan Grant, has confirmed that the Committee report on future
options for the brown-lidded bin kerbside recycling service has
been temporarily delayed.
He said: "Residents will be aware that the Council took the
decision in the summer to temporarily restrict brown bin
collections while we looked at the possibilities for the future
delivery of the service. This review included an online survey
where we sought public comment on the collection of food and garden
waste in Perth and Kinross."
"At the time when we announced the restriction, we also said we
intended that a report aimed at addressing the situation would come
to the Environment Committee meeting in November 2010. However, in
order to bring back a report detailing the most effective and
appropriate options, senior Council officers and I feel more time
is required to do this.
Working to find a suitable resolution
"Therefore we will be coming back to the Environment Committee
shortly, but not to next week's meeting. I realise this may not be
the answer residents were looking for, however, I want to assure
them that we are committed to finding a resolution which meets
their needs and also keeps our recycling and composting rate on the
up."
The temporary restriction to brown-lidded bin collections will
therefore continue in the interim period.
