Perthshire's Green Resorts
A Shared Vision
Here in the heart of Scotland is a magnificent landscape, rich
in wildlife, and home to some of the most remarkable trees and
woodlands of anywhere in Europe. Perthshire's Green Resorts are a
group of prestigious tourism businesses, all working towards
implementing responsible practices at their individual properties.
They share a passion for our beautiful environment and, together,
they aspire to make Perthshire a leading sustainable
destination.
The Perthshire’s Green Resorts group has produced a beautiful short film (approx
15 mins) highlighting some of the many sustainability initiatives
taking place at their different resorts.
Perthshire's Green Resorts are:
Background and Project Aims
The structure of the tourism industry in Perthshire generally
reflects that of Scotland, being predominantly made up of small to
medium sized businesses, many of which are family run. Uniquely,
however, Perthshire features a high concentration of quality
destination resorts. Businesses within this group share many broad
similarities of scale, product offering and high resource use.
The "Perthshire's Green Resorts" initiative started in May 2010
and is supported by Perth & Kinross Council and the European
Regional Development Fund (Developing Rural Tourism Project).
Through meetings, training events and networking opportunities the
initiative is offering ongoing support for the large Perthshire
tourism resorts, helping further strengthen their green initiatives
and identify new and innovative opportunities for joint working.
All five resorts are currently accredited to either Gold or Silver
Award level in The Green
Tourism Business Scheme, the national sustainable tourism
certification scheme for the UK.
Perthshire's Green Resorts share the belief that, like quality,
sustainability is a journey without end.
Therefore, all are open to continually learning, from each other
and from other businesses.
Any hotels located within Perth and Kinross are most welcome to
attend Perthshire's Green Resorts meetings and events -
whether you're just starting to think about environmental matters
or already hold any level of Green Tourism Business Scheme
Award.

Duchally Hotel
|
|
Duchally Hotel |
When Duchally was expanded
careful consideration was taken to preserve the natural features of
the site, most notably the mature trees and streams throughout the
estate, so the wildlife habitat could be preserved.
Enhancing the environment has been the corner stone of our
development.
Through the years Duchally policy has been to use local produce
and suppliers, where we can. We take great pride in sourcing from
Perthshire and in our reputation for excellent dining.
Another key Green Tourism goal is waste minimisation, and
recycling as much as possible, within our business
operation.

Crieff Hydro Hotel |
|
Crieff Hydro Hotel |
Perthshire's
beautiful; we love it here. Our business wouldn't even exist
without the natural spring that started it all (we've used our own
water supply since 1868). Not forgetting the fresh air and open
spaces our guests love. We understand our impact on the
environment, so we commit to thoughtfully and responsibly reducing
that impact. We review everything that comes into the business and
the levels of waste it creates. We source our supplies locally,
recycle all we can, keep up to date with legislation and make sure
our guests do their bit too.

Hilton Dunkeld House Hotel |
|
Hilton Dunkeld House Hotel |
Sitting in 280 acres of stunning
Perthshire countryside, more than half of which is designated as
woodland, sustainability is key to Hilton Dunkeld House.
The hotel is part of Hilton's global Lightstay programme which
gives a group-wide ranking on power and energy usage and waste
production. The hotel has introduced energy saving light
bulbs throughout, as well as a new recycling centre and water flow
filters.
We have a poly-tunnel for kitchen herb production and are part
of the Soil in the Community Foundation, supporting a group of
locals to develop a food production garden.

The Gleneagles Hotel |
|
The Gleneagles Hotel |
Responsible tourism is
high on the agenda at The Gleneagles Hotel.
From our biomass boiler, to our extensive recycling scheme, to
our seasonal, local-sourced menus, we're constantly on the look-out
for ways to reduce waste and energy usage.
Innovative green measures include growing our own grapes and
herbs, sending used corks to be used in drainage systems at the
Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh, a Bike-to-Work scheme, and investment
in chemical-free ionic cleaners.
In addition, staff fund-raising and a voluntary room charge of
£1 has raised more than £120,000 to date to help
preserve historic local woodlands.

Atholl Palace Hotel |
|
Atholl Palace Hotel |
The first hotel in
Pitlochry to achieve a GTBS Gold Award, the Atholl Palace Hotel
has proved that operating from a historic building dating back to
1874 is no barrier to implementing effective green
initiatives.
Standard measures now include a "green area" for guests with
information on green activities in the area; eco friendly cleaning
materials; low energy light bulbs and numerous biodiversity
projects in the Hotel Gardens including the iCONic Trees project in
partnership with the Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh. Lavender, and
other herbs for the Lavender Spa, and for use in the kitchens, are
all grown on site.
