"Help Us Be Safe"

This was the overwhelming message learned from young persons during the audit of Child Protection Services in Scotland undertaken by the Scottish Executive in 2002.

Children and young people felt that it was important to acknowledge the role that they themselves play in keeping safe and view the different roles of adults supporting them in this respect.

Children can be best protected when everyone works collaboratively, maintain communication and be alert to issues that may cause concern for young people.

This commitment to co-operate constructively does not solely rest with staff in Health, Education and Social Work Services, but also embraces relatives, friends, neighbours and quite possibly you, the web browser.

Here in Perth & Kinross, a new partnership agreement has been developed setting out the framework for the Child Protection Committee.  It states clearly that the overall aim of the Child Protection Committee is to ensure that children are safeguarded and protected by working together to promote continuous improvement and best practices in Child Protection.

Perth & Kinross Child Protection Committee has a number of main functions.  They can be placed under 3 main headings:

1    Strategic Planning

  • Planning and Connections
  • Communication and Co-operation
  • Listening to Children and Young People

2    Continuous Improvement

  • Policies, Procedures and Protocols
  • Management Information
  • Quality Assurance
  • Promotion of Good Practice
  • Training and Staff Development

3    Public Information

  • What to do and who to contact should they have concerns about the safety and well-being of a child or young person
  • Who the agencies invested in Child Protection are and what they do
  • What standards of services should people expect to receive
  • What the Child Protection Committee does and how this impacts on the protection of children
