Occupational therapy
Who is the service for?
Occupational Therapy, is a service which aims to "enable
children, adults and older people with physical, mental and / or
learning difficulties to be as independent as possible."
Occupational Therapists undertake assessments of need and, where
appropriate, provide equipment and adaptions to improve levels of
ability and promote a safer home environment.
This service may include:
- providing information, support and / or equipment to increase
your independence and confidence with daily activities, such as,
toileting, dressing, bathing and moving around your home,
- providing support to you and your carer in understanding and
managing your disability,
- arranging for minor adaptions to be carried out to your
home, such as grab-rails and banisters,
- Giving advice and assistance with major adaptions, e.g. ramp
and shower installations and widening doors for wheelchair
access,
- giving advice on how to meet your educational, work and leisure
requirements.
Anyone may contact us to receive advice from the Occupational
Therapy Service.
How can I get a referral to occupational therapy?
Referrals will most often by through a GP or as part of
preparations to discharge someone from a hospital. However, if you
are not in contact with a social worker and would like an
assessment of your needs to see if occupational therapy - or any
other type of support - is suitable for you, please contact the
Community Care Access Team on 0845 30 111 20 or email accessteam@pkc.gov.uk
Costs
There are no costs for the assessment or provision of
occupational therapy equipment. However, if you are assessed for
occupational therapy equipment, and you choose to receive this from
the council you will be asked to make a contribution to the costs
of the delivery, installation, and in some cases annual maintenance
of the equipment.
Delivery - flat fee of £10 per completed order
Installation - flat fee of £25 per fitting visit
Maintenance - £60 per item per year for fixed pieces of
equipment such as stairlifts.
Anyone being asked to pay the annual maintenance charge will also
be offered a financial assessment, and depending on their financial
circumstances they may not be asked to pay this full
amount.
Any charges which apply to you will be explained at the point of
assessment.
