Supported Accommodation

Our Young People Need YOU!
Perth & Kinross Council is committed to the provision of high quality care, and one of the methods of achieving this is our supported accommodation scheme.
The challenge for young people leaving the care system is incredible and the thought of living alone at this age can be very daunting and isolating. Therefore, various kinds of supports are needed to prepare our young people for independent living. Some of these are the practical skills they would have learned if they had grown up in an ordinary family home. For example, cooking, budgeting and contributing to family life.
However, many of our care-leavers have had a difficult time and the people who provide supported accommodation within our scheme are also someone they can talk to when they feel upset or lonely. The young people leaving care will be starting their first job or going to college and they are often lacking in confidence. Supported carers therefore are needed to offer the young people the necessary encouragement and advice in order for them to achieve what it is they want to achieve.
Those who provide supported accommodation come from a variety of backgrounds. Supported accommodation providers can and are married or single, working or retired, childless or have children still living at home. We need a variety of carers in order to meet our young people's individual needs.
Supported accommodation providers also need a keen interest in the welfare and well-being of young people, but no formal qualifications are required. A training programme will be given. You will also be given a weekly allowance for each young person.
Here at Throughcare and Aftercare, we have considerable experience in pairing young people with carers. After we match a young person with a supported accommodation provider, there is a period of induction where everyone can get to know each other over a few weeks.
If you are interested in becoming a supported accommodation provider, phone Colonsay Resource Centre on 01738 626940 for a chat with one of our Throughcare and Aftercare workers who will send you further information about the scheme. All of our Supported Carers go through an assessment procedure and once you have been approved you will receive ongoing support from the Throughcare and Aftercare Team.
