800th Anniversary of Perth
2010: Perth 800
2010 is the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Burgh of Perth. The foundation of Perth as a Royal Burgh dates back to the King William the Lion charter of 1210.
Provost Hulbert marked the 800 day countdown ( on 24th October 2007 ) with a rare appearance of the Royal Burgh Charter awarded to Perth in 1210 by King William the 1st, known as William the Lion, who ruled from 1143 to 1214.
Perth and Kinross Council will be co-ordinating a series of events and activities to commemorate the 800th anniversary as a major opportunity to stimulate civic pride and promote Perth and Kinross through a celebration of the area, its past and its future.
The ambition for Perth and Kinross is of a thriving, vibrant and successful area that plays a key role in Scotland’s economic, cultural and social life. The Perth 800 programme is being developed very much in line with that ambition - key objectives include enhancing the profile of Perth and Kinross, delivering economic, social and cultural benefits and also creating a platform for the bid for official city status for Perth.
The programme of events and activities is being created for all to enjoy and participate in with the focus on a series of themes including our heritage, our future, our communities, culture and sport, the economy as well as a civic programme.
