Skin and Bone - Life and Death in Medieval Perth
The Royal Burgh of Perth has been a thriving town for over 800
years. The town has grown considerably since its early days and,
although only St John’s Kirk stands to visibly remind us of
that medieval past, everyday we walk over the buried remains of the
old town.
To celebrate Perth 800, a fascinating new
exhibition in Perth Museum & Art Gallery uncovers the secrets
of medieval Perth and showcases the treasures unearthed by
archaeological excavations in the town. Skin &
Bone: Life & Death in Medieval Perth offers a glimpse
of the lives of ordinary people through extraordinary objects, many
of them not normally on display.
This special exhibition includes loans from other collections
and features the Hammermen Book and the Perth Psalter from the
National Library of Scotland and the Hammermen’s stock box
from St John’s Kirk. Also on display from Perth and
Kinross Council Archive will be one of the few surviving copies of
the charter from King William the Lion confirming Perth’s
royal burgh status, making this the must-see exhibition for
2010.
