Scotland-wide Free Bus Travel for Older and Disabled People
Last updated | 13/03/2008
The national travel concession scheme was introduced in April 2006 and provides free bus travel Scotland-wide for older and disabled people.
The scheme entitles people aged sixty or over and disabled people to travel free on any local bus and scheduled long distance coach service in Scotland throughout the day - including during the morning rush hour.
If you are eligible and wish to travel free by bus - both locally and throughout Scotland - you will have to obtain a new Scottish Citizen's Entitlement Card. The Entitlement Card replaces the Perth & Kinross Council travel concession pass.
The Entitlement Card is an electronic smartcard, with a standard branding to help bus drivers to recognise them easily. Over time your Entitlement Card may also allow you to access other public services through a single card.
The national travel concession scheme is run by Glasgow based Transport Scotland, an agency of the Scottish Executive. Local Councils are only responsible for processing applications for Entitlement Cards for disabled people.
The same eligibility criteria applies across the whole of Scotland to ensure consistency and is set in legislation. If you do not fall under the criteria within the legislation you will not be eligible for the scheme.
Transport Scotland have stipulated that if you are eligible for an Entitlement Card you must provide two pieces of evidence to demonstrate your eligibility for the scheme. All applicants must provide one piece of evidence that demonstrates residency in Scotland, and a second item which will evidence eligibility to the Scheme.
