School transport
Last updated | 04/06/2010
The Public Transport Unit organises transport for about 4500
mainstream pupils and for about 250 pupils with special education
needs - some 1.71 million journeys a year.
Over 100 transport operators, using various types of vehicles,
are used to provide these journeys to and from school. The vehicles
range from full double decked buses to vehicles adapted to carry a
single passenger in a wheelchair.
The transport operators are subject to detailed Conditions of
Contract, which cover a wide range of requirements relating to the
safe and legal operation of transport services. One of the
requirements is the mandatory screening of criminal records through
Disclosure Scotland for all drivers and
escorts used on transport contracts.
In addition, all operators, drivers and escorts are issued with
a Code of Conduct booklet, which explains how they should perform
their duties - including the procedures that should be followed in
emergency situations.
The driver (and escort where provided) will take all reasonable
steps to ensure the security, safety, dignity and comfort of
scholars in their care.
The Public Transport Unit monitors operator performance through
inspections and close liaison with schools, the Vehicle and Operator
Services Agency (VOSA), the Council's taxi licensing staff and
Tayside Police.
We welcome all feedback from parents and pupils so please do not
