School Transport
The Public Transport Unit organises transport for about 4000
mainstream scholars and for about 150 scholars with special
education needs.
Over 100 transport operators, using various types of vehicles,
are used to provide these journeys to and from school. The vehicles
range from full double decked buses to vehicles adapted to carry a
single passenger in a wheelchair.
The transport operators are subject to detailed Conditions of
Contract, which cover a wide range of requirements relating to the
safe and legal operation of transport services. One of the
requirements is the mandatory screening of criminal
records for all bus drivers and escorts used on transport
contracts.
In addition, all operators, drivers and escorts are issued with
a Code of Conduct booklet (which can be viewed opposite), which
explains how they should perform their duties - including the
procedures that should be followed in emergency situations.
The driver (and escort where provided) will take all reasonable
steps to ensure the security, safety, dignity and comfort of
scholars in their care.
The Public Transport Unit monitors operator performance through
inspections and close liaison with schools, the Vehicle and Operator
Services Agency (VOSA), the Council's taxi licensing staff and
Tayside Police.
Each parent/guardian of scholars entitled to free school
transport is issued with an information booklet "Travelling to
School" which can also be viewed opposite. We welcome all feedback
