Traffic Signals

Last updated | 28/08/2007

Ever increasing traffic levels and the impact of this on road safety has been the main reason for introducing traffic signals at junctions in Perth and other towns within the Council area.

All traffic signal junctions within Perth city centre are controlled using a computerised traffic control system. The traffic control system constantly monitors congestion on the road network. It then adjusts the timings on the signals to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow between signals. This helps to minimise delay across the city as a whole.

As well as having the dedicated bus lanes on Glasgow Road, Barrack Street and Strathmore Street all city centre signals have a Bus Priority system whereby the traffic control system gives priority to buses that are travelling through the signals. This system of Bus Priority has been implemented at over 30 junctions throughout Perth to help reduce bus journey times.
