Council policy on gritting
Gritting is carried out to ensure that the transport links which
are essential to economic and social activity can continue safely
throughout most of the winter. However, it is not the intention and
is not possible to keep all roads free from ice and snow at all
times.
We operate a priority system which, as far as reasonably
possible, will permit safe movement on the more important
parts of the road and pavement network, taking into account
the finance which has been made available.
All roads and pavements have been assessed and given a
priority. This priority takes account of how busy and
how important the road or pavement is.
When there is snow or ice, the most important roads and pavements
will be treated first and once these are clear the next most
important ones will be done and so on.
There are limits to the service that can be provided. Many
minor roads and pavements will not be treated unless they become
impassable.
