Gritted pavements
Last updated | 11/10/2011
Pavements have been assessed and given a priority based on their
usage and importance.
Category 1 pavements
Category 1 pavements are on main shopping areas, main arterial
footways, busy feeder footways and footways leading to community
centres and centres of employment.
When will category 1 pavements be gritted?
Pavements under this category will be gritted every day if
there is snow or ice. When needed, gritting can start at
6.30am and go on until 3pm.
Category 2 pavements
Less important pavements (Category 2 pavements) will
be gritted on weekdays (but not Public Holidays) if there is
snow or ice, starting at 8 am (after gritting Category 1
pavements) and going on until 3 pm. Sometimes only the
pavement on one side will be gritted - this gives the driver
more time to get to other streets.
Category 3 pavements
The other pavements are called Category 3 pavements and these
will only be gritted after the Category 2 pavements have been
completed. If there are several days of snow, the
pavement tractors will have to plough and grit the
Category 1 and 2 pavements every day so they may not have
time to get to the Category
pavements.
Pavements on Unadopted roads are not gritted.
