Gritted roads
Last updated | 06/10/2008
All roads have been assessed and given a priority based on their usage and importance.
Category 1 roads
Category 1 roads are main roads, roads to the larger communities, and roads leading to important places such as hospitals or fire stations.
When will category 1 roads be gritted?
The most important (Category 1) roads will be gritted every day if it is icy, between 5 am and 9 pm.
Category 1 roads may also be pre-gritted. In other words if the weather forecast and the conditions suggest that the roads will be affected by ice or snow, we will spread salt before the temperature falls. Pre-gritting is often carried out in late afternoon or early evening. But remember that the salt may be washed off, and there is never a guarantee that roads will be free of ice.
