Gritted roads
All roads have been assessed and given a priority based on
their usage and importance.
Category 1 roads
| What roads are included in this
category? |
Category 1 roads are main roads, roads to the larger
communities, and roads leading to important places such as
hospitals or fire stations. |
| When will these roads be
gritted? |
Category 1 roads will be gritted every day if it is icy.
On Mondays to Saturdays, this will be between 6 am and 9
pm.
On Sundays and Public Holidays, this will be between 8am and
9pm.
Category 1 roads have been divided into two groups (1a and 1b) with
the most important roads in Category 1a. Normally
gritters will treat Category 1a and 1b roads together but
in severe snow conditions priority will be given to the
Category 1a roads. This may mean that gritters will not be
available for some Category 1b roads for some time.
|
Pre-gritting
information |
Category 1 roads may also be pre-gritted. In other words if
the weather forecast and the conditions suggest that the roads will
be affected by ice or snow, we will spread salt before the
temperature falls. Pre-gritting is often carried out in late
afternoon or early evening. But remember that the salt may be
washed off, and there is never a guarantee that roads will be free
of ice.

settlements or a significant number of rural properties, secondary
distributor roads, local roads in settlements, and other urban
or rural roads with special difficulties such as steep
gradients. |

Holidays) between 7.30 am and 3 pm, after the Category 1 roads have
been gritted.
|
Category 3 roads
| What roads are included in this

only a small number of isolated properties, or local access roads
