Bridge strengthening
Last updated | 25/04/2007
The maximum permitted weight of lorries was increased in February 2001 to 44 tonnes. All bridges are having to be assessed to see if they can cope with this increase safely.
Where a need for strengthening is identified, the options for improvement are weighed against economic, safety and environmental factors, and put into a programme for improvement.
- In the intervening period it may be necessary to protect the bridge using:
- weight restrictions width restrictions aiming to reduce the bridge to one lane
Some bridges may be subject to permanent restrictions where the cost of strengthening cannot be justified.
