Privately owned walls
Owners of walls have a duty to ensure that they do not present a
danger to the public. Each year a small number of individuals are
killed by falling walls.
Walls maintained by the council
The council will maintain :
- walls that it owns
- walls that support the road
- road retaining walls
- walls that provide a safety barrier

- Design walls not to be dependent on maintenance
- Keep the wall pointed

- pointing is a skilled job. Make sure the person doing the
work knows how to match the colour of mortar, and is capable of
doing the job without covering the bricks or stones with
mortar.
