Childcare for school age children
There are various options for childcare for school age children in the different areas of Perth & Kinross during school term time and over the holidays. The determining factor is usually finding a service which is based in or drops children off at / picks them up from the school your child attends.
Basic details of the most common types of care for school age children are given below, more detailed information is available in the Choosing Childcare booklet [470Kb] which includes suggestions for questions to ask, what to look for and quality pointers.
Full details of childcare services in your local area, including school pick ups, opening times, vacancies and costs, are available from the Childcare and Family Information Service and on the Scottish Families website. See the Care Inspectorate website for gradings and inspection reports for registered services.
Out of School Care
Out of School Clubs offer childcare after school hours during term time, usually until 6:00 pm. Some clubs also run on In-Service days, during school holidays and before school. Most clubs are based in school premises and cater for children from Primary One to their second year at Secondary school. There are currently 20 Out of School Clubs throughout the Perth & Kinross area.
Wraparound Care Services based at schools in Crieff, Luncarty and at Inch View in Perth also cater for children up to P7.
See Kids clubs and wraparound care services for details of out of school care services which are run by the Local Authority.
Breakfast Clubs and Safe Start Services
Breakfast Clubs and Safe Start Services offer care for children on school premises before the start of school each morning.
Most Breakfast Clubs are run by the Local Authority and offer a healthy breakfast as well as supervised activities.
Safe Start services are run by groups of local parents to provide a safe place for children to be dropped off before school, breakfast is not provided. See Setting up a voluntary sector childcare service if you might be interested in setting up a service at your local school.
A childminder looks after children in the childminder's own home and can often provide very flexible care. There are currently 170 registered childminders in Perth & Kinross, most of whom offer care for school age children in their local area.
If you might be interested in becoming a childminder yourself, see details of Childminder training courses run by the council's Childcare Strategy Team.
Some nurseries offer care for school age children during term time and in school holidays. Contact the Childcare and Family Information Service for details of nurseries which offer drop offs / pick ups at your local school.
