Debate on building regulations & fire safety in Scotland

This subject matter was debated live from the Scottish Local Government and Communities Committee on 23 November 2017

The debate made very interesting viewing and highlighted a number of failings with the building standards system and construction industry in general. It recognised the benefits of local authority retaining verification status as a body independent from the construction companies. In doing so it also touched on the need to improve levels of consistency and timeliness of processing of building warrants across the country and the actions being taken to address this.

The Minister, Kevin Stewart MSP, also gave an update on two major working groups, one led by Paul Stollard and the other by John Cole (who undertook the review into the Edinburgh schools wall collapse) to look at fire safety and the building standards system & compliance respectively.

You can catch up on the debate on the Scottish Parliament TV.
