Re-opening of schools confirmed

Pupils will begin returning to school in Perth and Kinross from 12 August after the Scottish Government confirmed the country's schools will re-open full-time next month.

Children will make a phased return before attending full-time from 17 August.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon told the Scottish Parliament on Thursday 30 July that schools will be able to re-open because of suppression of Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Perth & Kinross Council will follow the Scottish Government and public health guidance to ensure that all children, young people and staff are safe in schools and will take the necessary approaches to mitigate against any risks.

This includes having hand sanitiser at all entrances and exits and greater emphasis on hand washing and hygiene.

Schools will also have "zero tolerance" of Covid symptoms - a fever, cough and a loss of taste or smell - and will follow the Scottish Government's Test and Protect system.

Sheena Devlin, Perth & Kinross Council's Executive Director of Education and Children's Services, said: "Following confirmation today that all schools across Scotland can reopen, we are pleased to be able to welcome pupils and staff back.

"The fast-moving nature of the Coronavirus pandemic has caused a great deal of uncertainty for pupils, staff, parents and carers but there is now clarity about the plans for the new term.

"We will be taking all possible steps to minimise the risk of transmission of the virus and will follow all guidance should any cases occur within a school.

"Our staff are committed to delivering the best education possible for children and young people.

"They have done an amazing job since lockdown began and schools were closed, coming up with a raft of innovative ways to keep children learning and engaged.

"We look forward to classes resuming after the summer holidays even if school life will, initially, be a lot different from how it was before lockdown."

"We have contingency plans in place should circumstances change and a blended model of learning, involving home and classroom learning, is needed."

Schools will shortly contact parents/carers direct regarding their own local arrangements. General information and updated FAQs will also be available .
