Vibrant festive message states Perth is where Christmas is made

Independent retailers in Perth city centre and the surrounding towns are the focus of a festive Perth and Kinross Council campaign encouraging residents of the area to 'shop local' this Christmas.

At the August meeting of the Enterprise and Infrastructure Committee, and in line with current Covid-19 guidance, Councillors approved the cancellation of the City of Perth Winter Festival.

Subsequently in October, the Council's City Centre Action Group, comprising of Councillors and business representatives, approved a £45K budget for an extensive 'Shop Local and Independent' initiative, which was bolstered by a £5K award from the Scotland Loves Local Fund.

Over 150 small businesses and artisans have been included in the campaign with opportunities ranging from listing gift ideas to appearing in short videos.

The campaign has been delivered in line with strategic objectives and recovery actions outlined in the draft Economic Wellbeing Plan for Perth and Kinross. The Plan has been shaped using direct business feedback gathered via the Perth and Kinross Covid-19 Business Support Taskforce.

Dawn Cotton Fuge, Co-Chairperson of the Perth Traders' Association, commented: "This is undoubtedly one of the most challenging festive periods small businesses have ever had to face, particularly independent retailers and the hospitality sector.

"It has been hugely encouraging therefore, to have the support of this vibrant 'Shop Local' campaign for the city centre and surrounding towns. The gift guide shows that Perth is still very much alive, with quality independent shops who would love to help our local Perth and Kinross residents find a beautiful Christmas gift.

"I am hopeful that this is the start of a positive narrative around Perth, and a strong private-public partnership that will see us build a resilient recovery."

Councillor Murray Lyle, Chair of the City Centre Action Group, said: "It has been a tough year for many local businesses across Perth and Kinross; this gift guide is a fantastic showcase of some of the unique, independent retailers we have and the wonderful products they sell.

"I understand the ease and convenience of using online shops, and for some people that might be their only option this year. However, if you are able to get out and do your Christmas shopping then I would encourage you to pick up a gift guide and visit your local shops. Perth and Kinross is known for it's independent businesses and by visiting them and shopping local, we can all help them have a positive end to the year."

The campaign comprises of the gift guide, radio, print, online advertising and includes legacy elements such as the online Business Directory and a series of short videos and photography.
