Short-term let operators reminded to apply for licences

Anyone operating or intending to operate a short-term let (STL) property or properties in Perth and Kinross is being reminded that they have just under two months to apply for a licence.

All short-term let hosts/operators must apply for a licence before the 1 October 2023 deadline.  Anyone who has been operating a short-term let prior to 1 October 2022 can still accept bookings and guests until an application is determined; however, they must apply before the deadline noted above. Owners who started operations after 1 October 2022 cannot begin trading until they receive their licence.

To date, Perth and Kinross Council has already received many applications, however with a significant number still to apply, Licensing Committee Convener Bailie Mike Williamson has urged both prospective and current operators alike to apply sooner rather than later. It is a criminal offence to operate an STL without a licence and could incur a fine of up to £2,500.

Bailie Williamson said: "While the beginning of October may seem some time away, to help ensure that everyone who runs a short-term let is compliant with the law, I would strongly encourage operators and hosts to submit their applications urgently if they haven't already done so. There has been a lot of media coverage of the short-term lets scheme and I would be concerned that people may be holding off applying without fully understanding the reputational implications for their business.

Our Licensing Team are ready to provide local advice and assistance and discuss the process with applicants."
