Councillors call for rethink over bus proposals

Councillors today unanimously called on bus company Stagecoach to reconsider its proposals to cut services across Perth and Kinross.

There was unanimous support for an emergency motion submitted by Carse of Gowrie Labour councillor Bailie Alasdair Bailey noting with "grave concern" Stagecoach's proposals to remove weekday services from the Carse of Gowrie and to reduce services elsewhere in Perth and Kinross.

Councillors also called on Stagecoach to extend the length of its consultation over the proposed changes and to discuss with Council officers how to minimise the impact of any changes to bus services in Perth and Kinross.

Perth and Kinross Council leader Grant Laing said: "I'd like to thank Bailie Bailey for bringing forward this emergency motion and for the unanimous, cross-party support it received.

"We are all extremely disappointed at Stagecoach's proposals and what they could mean for our residents.

"Public transport is a lifeline for many in our communities, particularly those in rural areas, and greater use of public transport is vital in efforts to cut emissions and meet the Scottish Government target of reducing car kilometres by 20% by 2030.

"Cuts to services between Perth Royal Infirmary and Ninewells Hospital also have the potential to impact our must vulnerable residents and increase traffic at both sites."

Councillor Laing added: "Council officers will be meeting with Stagecoach management on Friday and will be raising our concerns - and those of the people we represent - when they do.

"I hope Stagecoach recognises the strength of public feeling about their proposals and take the time to fully consider their potential impact."
