Approval sought for weed management trial

Councillors will be asked to approve a £110,000 trial scheme to improve weed management in Perth and Kinross next week.

The Council's Finance and Resources Committee will be asked to approve the two-year pilot project when it meets on Wednesday, 26 November.

This initiative aims to maintain cleaner, safer public spaces while addressing community concerns about weed management.

As part of the proposal, the Council will trial a growth retardant to reduce the need for increased glyphosate use, ensuring a more sustainable approach to weed control.

To support this, approval is being sought to allocate £110,000 from the Communities earmarked Reserve—spread over two years at £55,000 per annum. If successful, the trial may lead to future Budget considerations.

Perth and Kinross Council leader Councillor Eric Drysdale said: "We understand the concerns raised by residents about weed control and the impact it has on the appearance and safety of our streets.

"I am pleased to see this proposal coming forward, as it demonstrates our commitment to improving standards while exploring environmentally responsible solutions. This trial is an important step towards achieving a balance between effective weed management and reducing chemical use."

Committee convener Councillor Stewart Donaldson added: "We want everyone to be proud of where they live and this project will help manage the growth of unsightly weeds in our public spaces."
