The SHINE Team has been developed as part of Perth and Kinross Council's innovative and exciting transformation project to further enhance the service provision and support provided to children and young people who have a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and/or other complex or additional support needs. The team's ethos is to empower and enable parents and carers, and support children and young people to be independent and reach their full potential. This initiative will further strengthen the current community-based supports to children, young people and families. The focus of the team will be to provide families and other professionals with support, strategies and skills to support positive change. This will involve direct work with the children and young people, families and other important people on specific pre-agreed outcomes. The earlier intervention can be offered, the better outcomes for the child or young person and their families can be achieved.
Criteria
The team work primarily with children and young people aged between 4 to 16 years. In order to meet the criteria, the child or young person should have a diagnosis of ASD and/or other complex or additional support needs and not be under a guardianship order. We do not accept referrals for children with a sole diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In the instance where a child or young person does not have a formal diagnosis of ASD or a learning disability, the involved professionals need to be of the of the opinion that the child or young person has complex needs and/or behaviours.
If referrals are made from:
- Education: a CYPPM needs to have been held
- Health: evidence of what support and advice has been offered by the Health Visitor, School Nurse or other involved professional should be provided
- Third Sector: they need to provide a clear description of what support they feel is required, what support has been offered and what training the parents have attended
- Internal: referrals from other Social Work teams; the worker needs to be clear about what support they feel is required in addition to what they are already doing
- Parents: we would ask that as much information as possible is provided; this should include any support that they have already had or are currently receiving
Who can refer children, young people, and families to SHINE?
We encourage referrals from parents and carers, and will also accept referrals from Education. Health, Social Work and other services. However, consent must have been given by the parent or carer prior to the referral being made.
Evidence of previous involvement by other services and/or strategies implemented will be required on the referral form.
