Perth and Kinross Joins 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence 2024

Perth and Kinross Council will participate in the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign that raises awareness and urges individuals and organisations to advocate for an end to gender-based violence.

The campaign begins on 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) and runs until 10 December (Human Rights Day). Throughout Perth and Kinross, a series of events has been organised to address the various forms of gender-based violence and raise public awareness.

This year's theme in Perth and Kinross, "Imagine a Scotland without violence against women and girls," serves as a call to envision and reflect on a Scotland free from gender-based violence. The theme will shape discussions, activities, and events, encouraging a forward-looking dialogue on what a safer Scotland would look like.

The Perth and Kinross 16 Days campaign was launched on Friday, 22 November, at 11 am at Perth Concert Hall, with a keynote by First Minister John Swinney MSP and a performance from the Rock Choir.

Other events throughout the campaign will include a Reclaim the Night March in Perth, to show solidarity with women, an evening of Universal Comedy hosted by Lubna Kerr, a seminar on local human trafficking issues, and many more community activities and events to engage and inform.

Full details of the programme are available on Perth and Kinross Council's website at https://www.pkc.gov.uk/.

First Minister John Swinney MSP said: "Gender-based abuse and violence has no place in modern Scotland and we are committed to stamping it out.

"As First Minister, but also as a husband and a father, I am proud to support the 16 Days of Activism campaign and recognise the vital role that men need to play in tackling violence against women and girls, including challenging abusive behaviour wherever it occurs.

"The Scottish theme for this year's 16 Days of Activism is "Imagine a Scotland without Gender-Based Violence", and the only way we can realise that is by ensuring the next generation are equipped to spot abusive behaviour and call it out. "

Perth and Kinross Council's Housing and Social Wellbeing Committee Convener Councillor Tom McEwan said: "We are proud to stand with our community and other organisations to address the pressing issue of gender-based violence. This year's theme, 'Imagine a Scotland without violence against women and girls,' is both a call to action and a vision of hope.

"Our 16 Days of Activism events will raise awareness of the many issues surrounding abuse, equip people to recognise the signs of gender-based violence, and share resources for those affected.

"No one needs to suffer in silence, help is available. If you are experiencing any form of gender-based abuse, we encourage you to contact us on 01738 475000 for advice and connection to support services."
