Weather update, Thursday 22 January 2026, 2pm

Following Met Office Yellow and subsequently Amber rain warnings issued for parts of the Perth and Kinross area, the Council is continuing to respond to the impact of heavy rain and gusting winds.

Our staff and teams are ready and prepared to offer support and assistance where required to our communities and we are remaining in contact with local Community Resilience Groups.

Alyth Burn has risen to a high level and is also being affected by fallen trees but has not so far burst its banks.

A landslip at Tulliemet near Ballinluig due to the heavy rain has been cleared. The conditions have led to some flooding concerns for a number of properties at St Cedd's Road in Ballinluig. These properties are partly housing association (Caledonia HA) and partly privately owned. Caledonia HA are on site, along with the Council providing pump equipment and sandbags. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were on site from 5am today until around 1pm.

Sweeney's Garage Services 91/A/B were cancelled for the rest of the day at 12.40pm due to road conditions in the Aberfeldy area.

Perth Flood Scheme

As per the Perth Flood Scheme arrangements the South Inch flood gates were closed yesterday as a precautionary measure. Other flood gates in Perth have been closed this morning after further checks ahead of high tide around 5pm today:

North Inch; Perth Harbour (main gates); Shore Road; Tay Street; Commercial Street; Bridgend Court and North Muirton.

Flood Warnings have been issued a short time ago for the River Tay from North Muirton to the North Inch and for basement properties from the North Inch to Friarton Bridge. Council staff will be reaching out to basement property owners this afternoon. Flood gates are also being closed at the viewing platform on Tay Street at present.

Water flow levels are continuing to be monitored by Council officers with updated information from SEPA, and any further final gate closures that may be required will be done in accordance with agreed procedures.
