Disablement reduction

You may be able to get a reduction on your Council Tax bill if you, or an adult or child living with you, is permanently disabled.

If you qualify for a Disabled Persons Reduction your Council Tax will be reduced to the band below the actual band your property is in. For example, if you are in a band D property the amount of Council Tax you will be charged will be based on the charges for a band C property.

If your property is already in a band A you will still receive a reduction in your Council Tax if you qualify for a Disabled Person Reduction.

Please see Council tax banding and charges - Perth & Kinross Council for details of the charges for each band.

Eligibility

This is a property-based reduction, for a dwelling that has been adapted or had changes made that are essential and of major importance in the day-to-day wellbeing of the person with a disability. The facilities required are.

  • An additional bathroom or kitchen within the property specifically used for meeting the needs of the disabled person. Please note that the bathroom must contain a bath or shower facility; a toilet and sink would not qualify.
  • A room, which is not a kitchen, bathroom or lavatory and which is predominately used by and is required for meeting the needs of the disabled person. e.g. a therapy or treatment room
  • Sufficient floor space to permit the use of the wheelchair indoors. Please note that the wheelchair must be used indoors; if the disabled person only requires the use of the wheelchair out with the property there will be no entitlement to this reduction

To assess your entitlement we may need you to provide additional evidence in support of your application.

We may also need to inspect your property to ensure all the qualifying conditions are met as declared in your application.  If we need to inspect your property, we will contact you to arrange a suitable time to visit.

The application form will ask you to upload any relevant documents, such as supporting letters from health care professionals or photographs of the facilities provided to support your application. Providing this will enable us to process your application as quickly as possible and may remove the need to visit the property
