A whole range of courses exist on various topics relating to mental health and wellbeing, available to the public, staff and volunteers.

Training
We offer various mental health training courses including Scotland's Mental Health First Aid (SMHFA), Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST) and SafeTALK. There are also training courses offered by various organisations such as the NHS, voluntary organisations and private organisations. Email MHTraining@pkc.gov.uk for more information about training in the Perth and Kinross area.
Scotland's Mental Health First Aid Training
By the end of the 12-hour interactive course, participants will:
- have an understanding of suicide, self-harm and mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, panic attacks and psychosis
- know how to recognise if someone is experiencing a mental health problem
- have practiced skills to help a person who is developing a difficulty with their mental health
- be able to support people to access appropriate help, including both professional support and evidence-based self-help strategies
Who is this training aimed at?
Anyone who wants to learn how to support someone in distress. Participants can use the skills they learn in all settings.

Scotland's Mental Health First Aid Young People Training
This training offers basic general information about mental health problems. The knowledge presented and understanding developed in the course helps to remove stigma and fear and to give confidence in approaching a young person in distress.
Who is this training aimed at?
This course is aimed at adults who significantly support or care for young people aged 11-17. This course is not for delivery direct to young people.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
ASIST is a two day comprehensive workshop for anyone who wants to learn how to recognise the signs of suicidal thoughts and how to intervene to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. The course is designed to help all in communities to become more willing, ready and able to help people at risk of suicide
Participants will be able to:
- To be able to recognise invitations for help
- To reach out and offer support
- To be able to review the risk of suicide
- To be able to apply a suicide intervention model
- To link people with community resources
Who is this training aimed at?
Any member of staff, members of other statutory and voluntary organisations and members of the public.
SafeTALK
SafeTALK is aimed at giving participants the skills to recognise that someone may be suicidal and to connect the person to someone with suicide intervention skills. It is designed for organisations that already have ASIST trained helpers in place to maximise intervention as the main suicide prevention focus. This half-day course gives participants the skills to recognise that someone may be suicidal and to connect that person with suicide intervention skills.
Who is this training aimed at?
Communities or organisations that already have ASIST trained helpers in place to maximise intervention as the main suicide prevention focus.
