Applying for a job with us

Your application

Each job advertisement provides a detailed description of the role and the ideal candidate, along with a link to the role profile.

Your application should highlight your relevant skills, knowledge, qualifications, values, behaviours, and training to evidence that you meet the job requirements. The selection panel will use this information to determine if you meet the necessary criteria to advance to the next stage.

The online application form will ask if you consider yourself to have a disability.  If you answer 'Yes' we will guarantee you an interview if you meet the essential criteria for the job (outlined in the job advert and role profile) so it's important that you evidence this in your application.

Tips for completing your application form

  • Download role profile: Consider downloading the role profile before the post closes, as it will not be accessible after the advert has closed.
  • Flexible completion: You can complete your online application in one go or save it and return to it before the closing date.
  • Prevent data loss: To avoid losing your work due to system timeout, consider typing your answers in a Word document and then copying them into the application form.
  • Keep information current: Ensure your application form is up to date, including your current or most recent employment and at least three years of work history. This should cover time spent in education, career breaks, periods of unemployment, volunteering, travel, etc., with no gaps.
  • Verify contact details: Make sure your email address is correct, as we use it to confirm receipt of your application and to notify you if you've been selected for the next stage. Regularly check your email and spam folder. Also, ensure other contact details, such as your phone number and referees' email addresses, are accurate.
  • Demonstrate values and behaviours: Our values and behaviours of ambition, compassion and integrity, influence our work and support us in the delivery of our key priorities. Within your application, please give examples of how you match the job requirements and display our values and behaviours.
  • Showcase additional experience: Besides work experience, tell us about other activities such as voluntary work, challenging projects, travel, sports, or professional development that have equipped you with valuable skills relevant to the job.

Remember, we want you to present the best version of yourself. Please include as much relevant information as you can and good luck!

If you need additional support in completing your application, please contact us at HR@pkc.gov.uk.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know what skills and experience I need to apply for the position?

The advert will tell you about the job, including the main responsibilities, skills and experience required. A role profile is attached to the vacancy at the bottom of the advert. This will detail additional skills, experience, and knowledge needed for the job. You may want to print a copy of these as they won't be available after the vacancy closes.

Do I have to complete the diversity questions?

Yes, however, you can choose the "Prefer not to answer" option for any of the questions that you do not wish to answer. Information provided in this part of the application does not form part of the selection process and it is not available to the selection panel.

Can you give me more information on the Guaranteed Job Interview Scheme?

We guarantee an interview to any applicant applying through the Guaranteed Job Interview Scheme who has a disability and possesses the skills and experience essential for the job.

Additionally, any disabled applicant who does not wish to apply through the Guaranteed Job Interview Scheme can indicate if they are unable to meet a requirement due to their disability when applying for a job. In such cases, the Council will consider and where reasonable, make adjustments.

The Equality Act (2010) defines a person as disabled if they have a mental or physical impairment that has a substantial long-term effect (more than 12 months) on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.

If a person is taking measures to treat or correct an impairment (other than by using spectacles or contact lenses) and without those measures, the impairment would likely have a substantial effect on their ability to carry out normal day to day activities, it is still treated as though it has an effect.

"Hidden" disabilities, for example, mental illness or mental health conditions, diabetes or epilepsy are also included. Cancer, HIV infection and multiple sclerosis are considered disabilities under the Act from the point of diagnosis.

Progressive conditions and those with fluctuating or recurring effects will amount to a disability in certain circumstances.

Section 60 of the Equality Act (2010) prohibits employers from asking questions about health and disability before offering an applicant a job. However, there are specific circumstances when questions can be asked during the recruitment process, such as identifying whether applicants can carry out a function intrinsic to the work concerned. Employers are also allowed to ask questions that enable them to implement positive action to advance equality for disabled people, such as the Guaranteed Job Interview Scheme.
