Work to encourage safer speeds

Work to introduce the national 20mph speed strategy to Perth and Kinross and encourage safer driving speeds on local roads has been progressing well over recent months.

Appropriate adjustments are being made to speed limits on local urban roads and streets after detailed assessment and in discussion with local elected members.  This varies from location to location, and the speed limit changes are tailored to individual circumstances. For example, some key transport routes into larger towns will retain their 30mph limit on the edge of the settlement, but this will be lowered to 20mph in town centres.

Around 135 communities across the Council's 12 wards will receive a lower speed limit as part of the 20mph national strategy being promoted by Transport Scotland. To date, 73 of these communities have already had lower speed limits introduced along with accompanying physical measures such as road signage.  Most recently, this work was completed in Ward 8 (Kinross-shire) including Kinross and Milnathort.

The next phase, now underway, is covering Perth City itself across Wards 10, 11 and 12, and is expected to take approximately 12 weeks to complete.

Economy and Infrastructure Convener, Councillor Eric Drysdale said: "We are working on delivering the local approach to the national 20mph strategy to support safer driving and safer streets for everyone. Great progress has been made to date, and I look forward to seeing the programme coming to completion over the coming months."

Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop said:"Road safety remains an absolute priority for the Scottish Government, and that is why we are investing a record £48 million this financial year into roads safety activity and programmes. One death is one too many and I am focused on making our roads safer through Scotland's Road Safety Framework to 2030.

"Reducing excessive speed is a key focus of that work. Research shows that if someone is hit by a car at 20mph, they are seven times more likely to survive than if they were hit at 30mph.

"The implementation of more 20mph speed limits will improve road safety - keeping people safe and making it easier for people to choose walking, wheeling and cycling for everyday journeys."
