City centre junction to reopen after Scott Street fire

A Perth city centre junction closed since a fatal fire in June last year will reopen on Monday 23 February.

A man died and two people, an eight-year-old girl and a 27-year-old man, were injured in the fire at Scott Street on 14 June 2025.

Fifty-five households had to be rehoused after damage to the building made neighbouring structures unsafe.

A Chihuahua puppy called Vilo was also rescued from the building after surviving almost two weeks in the burnt-out tenement.

The fire-damaged tenement had to be demolished and stabilisation work completed on adjacent buildings.

Although the junction of Scott Street and South Street will reopen on Monday, it will be single lane outside That Bar to allow footway works to be completed.

We have been unable to complete footway works outside Price Crushers due to scaffolding and this work will be carried out once the scaffolding is removed.

Work to reinstate the junction at Princes Street leading to South Street to one way will be carried out week commencing 2 March.

A road closure will be required while this work is undertaken, We plan to resurface the carriageway between Canal Street and South Street at the same time.

Perth and Kinross Council leader Councillor Eric Drysdale said: "The demolition and associated works have been an extremely long and complicated process.

"I'd like to thank residents, businesses and visitors to Perth city centre for their patience while these have been completed.

"Our staff and contractors have worked extremely hard to re-open the road, particularly as they have also had to contend with extremely poor weather over recent weeks and I would like to thank them for all their efforts."

Councillor Drysdale added: "The fire last June had a devastating effect and our thoughts continue to be with those who lost a loved one, and those whose homes and businesses were affected. Fires of this magnitude are, fortunately, extremely rare but the consequences can last for an extremely long time.

"We have worked hard to complete the demolition and get the area re-opened as soon as possible."

From 23 February the temporary loading bays and bus bays will be removed and reinstated to the previous traffic restrictions at the following locations:

  • South Methven Street (outside Marcotrition)
  • Kinnoull Street (outside Alans Pet Shop)
  • Scott Street (Outside Craigdon Mountain Sports)
  • King James Place (St Leonards in the Fields Church)

The temporary bus stop on Tay Street (opposite the Capital Asset) will made permanent.
