The Joint Equipment Loan Service (JELS)

Stakeholders in the service include Occupational Therapy, Community Nursing, Community Alarm Services and Physiotherapy. The equipment provided by JELS ranges from daily living aids that assist with toileting, bathing, showering and household activities to pressure care mattresses and cushions, profiling beds and mobile hoists. The service also asset manages a wide range of Telecare technology which is distributed and fitted by the Community Alarm service.

Equipment is provided to support hospital discharge and to prevent hospital admission by maximising the service user's independence within their home environment while supporting their rehabilitation and/or improving safety in their home. Equipment is also supplied to support end of life situations.

A wide range of health care professionals and assessing workers have on-line access to the Equipment Loans Management System (ELMS) which allows them to place and prioritise orders direct with JELS. Equipment delivery and collection is arranged at least 24 hours in advance and, because of effective route planning, a three hour timeframe can be given to service users and/or their relatives, allowing them to plan their time. All on-line equipment orders, service histories and stock movements are tracked and traced on ELMS.

Collections and equipment recycling is also a vital part of the service and at the store there is a dedicated team involved in the return and refurbishment of all equipment stocks. In recent years, the value of equipment refurbished and redistributed into the community exceeded £1m per year.

JELS also manages and monitors the planned maintenance and breakdown repairs of any equipment the service provides on loan to service users.
