Short break and respite care

If you're thinking about fostering, providing respite can be a good way to start your career as a carer. Perth & Kinross Council is especially seeking short breaks respite carers to help families where a child or children have disabilities.

Normally short breaks carers provide continuing regular support to the same young person over a number of years, building a close relationship with them and their family. Arrangements for short breaks respite care very much depend on the needs of the child and family concerned, and what support carers can reasonably offer that fits in with their own day to day lives. For example, this could range from care once a month, to a week away during school holidays.

Anyone looking to become a short breaks carer will, during their assessment and after approval by the local Fostering & Permanence Panel, be directly involved in discussions about the children and their needs and be able to say what they can manage to provide. Full training and essential equipment will also be provided.

Many families locally need short breaks support and it can make a real difference to their lives - whether to spend time with their other children, have a night out or just catch up on lost sleep! It also has a real benefit for children and young people as they get individual time with their carer to do things independently from their families and build their self confidence generally.

If you think this could be a service you could offer or would like more information please contact our Family Based Care Team by phone or email via the contact details on the right of this page.
