Real Time Information (RTI) is Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs' (HMRC) system for collecting Pay as You Earn (PAYE) information from employers and pension providers who are now required to provide HMRC with income details immediately after each payment they make.
Perth and Kinross Council may be notified of a change in customer's earnings or private pension through the RTI process. This is permitted by section 127 of the Welfare Reform Act 2012.
This notification may result in a customer's entitlement to Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Reduction (HB/CTR) changing and this may result in an overpayment.
In such cases, customers will be notified of any change (and overpayment) to their benefit by letter.
Customers will be notified of any change in their CTR through a revised Council Tax Bill.
It is important to remember that the information the Council has used has been provided by DWP and HMRC. The information was initially provided by either an employer or pension provider.
RTI does not remove or reduce our customer's duty to notify us of change of circumstances.
