Offer in action - routes into construction

Do you remember what it was like trying to figure out what you wanted to do when you left school? For many people the job they do now isn't one they had even heard of when they were at secondary.

Skills Development Scotland has recognised the demand for new talent into the construction sector to fulfil the country's infrastructure needs in the coming years. So, there's a need for career opportunities for young people, and a need for young people to work in a particular sector - two needs which perfectly dovetail.

Rather than simply advertise the jobs, Council services worked closely with commercial construction firms and local young people to create a programme designed to give an insight into career paths available in the construction sector.

Developed for care-experienced young people in Perth and Kinross, Routes into Construction has so far given 20 young people the chance to understand more about working in the sector, gain a valuable health and safety qualification, and develop employability skills in the sector. Of the young people who've been involved a small number have so far gone on to obtain full-time employment in the sector, but all have had their eyes opened to careers they might never have previously considered.

Working together in partnerships with private sector employers, industry leaders and relevant council services, is a great way to create new opportunities for young people living in Perth and Kinross and prove that everyone has something to offer.
